Professional Image Perception of Nurses in the COVID-19 Pandemic: Example of a Public Hospital

INTRODUCTION: In this study, it was aimed to determine the professional image perceptions of nurses working in a public hospital in the COVID-19 pandemic and to compare them according to their personal and professional characteristics.
METHODS: The research was carried out in descriptive and cross-sectional type. The population consisted of nurses working in a public hospital in Istanbul between June and July 2020 (n=668). The sample was calculated as a minimum of 244 nurses with a known population sample. Data were collected from 250 nurses who agreed to participate in the study using the "Personal Information Form" and the "Scale of Occupational Image Perception in Nursing".
RESULTS: It was determined that the nurses' professional image perception score was between 165.50±12.17, and they had good image perception. Personal and professional characteristics of the nurses did not affect the total score of the scale of perception of professional image, but in sub-dimension comparisons, the age of the nurses was on the occupational status and education sub-dimension score; sex was on the sex sub-dimension score; education was on appearance and education sub-dimension score; on the sub-dimensions of professional experience, professional competence, professional status and education. It was determined that the unit they worked in made a significant difference on the occupational status and education sub-dimension.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: As a result of the study, it was determined that the professional image perception of the nurses was at a good level.

COVID-19 Salgınında Hemşirelerin Mesleki İmaj Algısı: Bir Kamu Hastanesi Örneği

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Bu çalışmada bir kamu hastanesinde çalışan hemşirelerin koronavirüs hastalığı (COVID-19) salgınındaki mesleki imaj algılarının belirlenmesi, kişisel ve mesleki özelliklerine göre karşılaştırılması amaçlandı.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Araştırma tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel tipte gerçekleştirildi. Evreni, İstanbul’da bir kamu hastanesinde Haziran-Temmuz 2020 tarihleri arasında çalışan hemşireler oluşturdu (n=668). Örneklem, evreni bilinen örneklem hesabı ile minimum 244 hemşire olarak hesaplandı. Veriler “Kişisel Bilgi Formu” ve “Hemşirelikte Mesleki İmaj Algısı Ölçeği” kullanılarak araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden 250 hemşireden toplandı.
BULGULAR: Hemşirelerin mesleki imaj algısı skorunun 165,50±12,17 ile iyi imaj algısı aralığında olduğu saptandı. Hemşirelerin kişisel ve mesleki özelliklerinin mesleki imaj algısı ölçek toplam skorunu etkilemediği ancak alt boyut karşılaştırmalarında, hemşirelerin yaşı mesleki statü ve eğitim alt boyut skoru üzerinde; cinsiyeti cinsiyet alt boyut skoru üzerinde; eğitimi dış görünüş ve eğitim alt boyut skoru üzerinde; mesleki deneyimi mesleki yeterlilik, mesleki statü ve eğitim alt boyutları üzerinde; çalıştıkları birimin ise mesleki statü ve eğitim alt boyutu üzerinde anlamlı fark oluşturduğu saptandı.
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Çalışma sonucunda, hemşirelerin mesleki imaj algısının iyi düzeyde olduğu saptandı.
